The Best Dancing Weekend Of The Year
November 21st 22nd and 23 nov 2008.
LONGFORD ARMS HOTEL

The programme is packed with nearly continuous music and dancing from 7pm on Friday night all the way into the very early hours of Monday morning. The crowds are big enough to fill two hotels, the Longford Arms, the main venue, and its sister hotel, the Annaly, located on opposite sides of the main street, plus all the remaining local accommodation. There’s usually something interesting in the programme – last year a country band played on Saturday afternoon, and that’s happening again. New this year are workshops in Cape Breton step dancing and session music by a young Scottish trad band.

Starting off the dancing from 7 to 10pm on Friday are Seamus Melvin and Marie Garrity with jiving and two-hand dancing in the Annaly Hotel. The ceili that night from 10pm to 1.30am is with the Lough Ree Ceili Band in the Longford Arms. James Donaghue and Leo Logan keep things going with a late session.

Saturday begins with a morning workshop by Pat Murphy from 10.30am to 1pm in the Longford Arms. Sabra MacGillivray direct from Canada holds a class in the Annaly Hotel on Cape Breton step dancing from 11am to 1pm. This is a type of sean nós dancing which originated in Scotland and survived in the highlands of Nova Scotia on the Atlantic coast of Canada. Sabra is a young teacher and award-winning performer raised in that tradition.

After lunch at 2pm, there’s the launch of a CD by the Lough Ree Ceili Band, followed by a big Irish country dance with Robert Mizzell and special guest Patrick Feeney. From 7 to 9pm in the bar of the Annaly Hotel there’s a session with Johnny Rocks, a “jazzed and rocked up” trad band from Glasgow. They’re followed by the Annaly Ceili Band who play from 9pm to 12am. Across the street in the Longford Arms, Swallow’s Tail Big Band play for the main ceili from 10pm to 1.30am. Afterward, there’s more from Johnny Rocks.

Pat Murphy and Sabra MacGillivray each hold workshops again on Sunday morning from 11am to 1pm, and Johnny Rocks make another appearance in the Annaly Hotel from 12.30 to 2pm. The afternoon ceili features Johnny Reidy from 2.30 to 5.30pm, followed by a singalong with Fergus Harman, 7-9pm. That night Micheál Sexton and Pat Walsh play from 9pm to 12am for the closing ceili, followed by a farewell hooley with the Sean og Loonies

A weekend worth going to with 35 hours of Music,Song and Dance.
